Transformation of an existing class “C” office building into a new corporate headquarters for a progressive bank brand.
SmartBank is a regional financial brand that embraces a progressive & modern approach toward banking. As they expand their presence and build more branches & offices, their branded architectural style could be described as contextually modern with a preference given toward embracing local materials & craft. For this project, a regional corporate office headquarters with a small public banking amenity, we were able to convince the client to forego a total demolition of an existing class “C” office building and provided a solution to successfully renovate the structure into the modern face of their growing brand. Part of responsible sustainable design is recognizing the energy already embodied in the built environment is a precious unnatural resource. It’s estimated that almost 80% of a building’s overall energy use is related to embodied energy, or the energy used in the extraction and manufacture of building materials, as well as a building’s construction and demolition. Renovations like the one at SmartBank can help cut down on those costs — both financial and environmental.
To facilitate both an economically and ecologically responsible transformation, much of the existing building interior was re-used. All exterior windows were replaced with high-performance systems, exterior insulation was improved along with exterior envelope upgrades, and a new lobby with an iconic building entry was added. Highly durable and recyclable materials were selected for both the exterior and interior. The transformation utilizes metal panel, FSC tongue and groove cypress siding, and locally sourced “Crab Orchard” stone accents.
